Colonel
(Ret.) Steve Wilson began his twenty-eight year military career
in 1977 as a soldier in the U.S. Army Reserve where he served as
an Intelligence Interrogator. He later transferred to the
Louisiana Army National Guard and attended Officer Candidate
School at Fort Benning, GA. In 1979, Wilson graduated and was
commissioned as a Distinguished Military Honor Graduate. In
1986, after attending Officer Basic Course and Airborne School,
Wilson entered active duty service and was assigned to the famed
1-141st Field Artillery Battalion. He went on to serve in
various command and staff level positions.
In January
1989, Wilson transferred to the 415th Military Intelligence
Battalion (Linguist) as the Battalion Operations Officer where
he directed Interrogation, Counter Intelligence, and Linguist
operational missions and training world-wide.
In 1994, Wilson
was reassigned to Washington, D.C., to serve as a Detailed
Inspector General for Intelligence Oversight at the National
Guard Bureau where he worked until 1997, when he transferred to
the Defense Intelligence Agency to direct specific intelligence
operations.
Three years
later, Wilson joined the U.S. European Command in Stuttgart,
Germany, where he served as Operations Chief of the South
Central Group. There, he directed the operational training of
former Eastern Bloc countries in preparation for their entry
into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
In 2003, Wilson
returned to the National Guard Bureau as Chief of the
Intelligence Branch for the Army National Guard. Later, he
became the Current Intelligence Director – J2, for the newly
formed National Guard Bureau Joint Staff where he served until
his retirement in December of 2004.
Prior to
beginning his military career, Wilson served a combined 14 years
in law enforcement, from 1972 to 1986, with the Jefferson Parish
Sheriff’s Office, New Orleans Police Department, and Louisiana
State Police.
In 2004,
Colonel (Ret.) Wilson joined the Department of Homeland Security
as Chief of Information Integration, deploying the Homeland
Security Information Network to all 50 states and six
territories. The network was instrumental in saving lives in
the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
In September of
2006, Wilson became the Assistant Deputy Director for Homeland
Security for the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and
Emergency Preparedness, where he oversees the state’s critical
infrastructure, information technology, and the Intelligence
Fusion Center.
Wilson is a
graduate of the U. S. Army Intelligence Advanced Course,
Combined Arms Staff School and the Command and General Staff
College. In 1985, he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in
Criminal Justice from Tulane University and completed Masters of
Strategic Intelligence course study at the American Military
University.
His awards and
decorations include numerous Army Meritorious Service, Army
Commendation, and Achievement Medals, Joint Service and Air
Force Commendation Medals, and numerous State awards which
include the Louisiana Commendation and Emergency Service Medals.
